What He Doesn’t Know

In bed my baby sleeps,
eyes closed, hands stretched out.
He has no fears yet, no worries,
no hurt. War has not yet caressed
those soft cheeks, nor death
tickled his round stomach.
He does not know yet
that he will defend peace one day,
does not know of what
is to come. Gunfire, bombs,
and endless desert. For now
as experiences mold his
brain, as he learns from his surroundings,
and as love enters his heart,
he sleeps.
