Together, Apart (A Sonnet)

Orange, red, and yellow leaves start to fall,
casting gold beams across your saddened face.
I hug you and say you can always call,
a relief that something can close the space.
Over a year ago, I said those things,
and everyday we drift farther apart.
It doesn’t tear me up, it only stings;
I know you’re safe in the depths of my heart.
Now the flowers bloom by rays of the sun,
signaling an end to the bitter cold.
They say reconnect, let the fight be done,
and I listen, letting their words take hold.
I make the first move, a casual hey,
you almost walk, but then sit down and stay.
